nana!

So today (17th of november)I travelled up from Waterford to Limerick with my Great Nannys wardrobe!....I discovered the wardrobe the weekend before last when my Dad, Sister and I went for a drive up to the Comeragh Mountians. my Great Grand Mother used to live there years and years ago..and I suppose my Father thought it would be a nice family thing to do..ya know go back to your roots! and it was wonderful to see the old house! and to know where we all came from. When we were looking around I noticed this old cabenet/wardrobe that was in the old sitting room but I didnt pay it that much attenetion. It was only when I came back up to college did my mind start, I was thinking about my project and I felt that I was coming to a dead end with my ideas and then i began to think of the cabenet in the Comeraghs!!
my idea for my project was boxes and having different object and sounds in the boxes. when I thought about this more I relised that it would work much better in an object that we could all relae to! the boxes were cold and indifferent! So then I thought of the cabinet!
Anyway! its happened the wardrobe/cabinet is here up in hte studio, looking at me everyday i go in, wanting me...willing me to do something with it!
I went around limerick collecting cloths from Charity Shops. I got tis idea from Christian Boltanski! He uses people cloths
'cloths that people chose, charished, and loved' and he gave them new life.
i want to encorporate boltanskis idea but have my own twist on it!
When I was putting the cloths into the wardrobe i really didnt like it, to me it just looked plain, it told no story, it didnt intrigue!
I then began to wonder about cloths tags! and instead of the price and the bar code i wanted to put a name or a label of what tha person was...well my interputation of what that person once was e.g a mother, a father, a son, a daughter, a banker, a race car driver, a kisser, a hugger, a walker, a talker...you get the idea!
so i tired that! and it looked wonderful! but then i began to wonder, how am i going to get people to look into the cabinet??...WHY NOT WRITE THE WORDS ON THE OUTSIDE YOU SAY! WHY OLD CHAP THAT SOUNDS JUST SPIFFING!!!!!
so i did!...and it looks just incredible!
this week is all about te outside! so my goal is to crave the words into the wood!
tune in next time follks!

'burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow romance candles'

The boxes are under way...im experimenting with different materials that i can make the boxes out of...and also what im going to fill them with.
the boxes themselves are going to be based on my urban surroundings and my reaction to it. i want to encorporate the emotions that i have felt up here such as apprehension(when i first arrived)lonliness(because i left home) and many more feeling that i have experienced up here.
the boxes are my journey..but also i want other people to experience there own while interacting with it.

there will be 12 boxes...i think! im still in the process of thinking about the amount i want, because i feel that if there is 12 that i will be repeating myself alot and that I DO NOT WANT TO DO! so maybe i will choose 6 boxes!
each box will house a different SENSE and EMOTION! this will be done (hopefully) by using sight, sound, colour and touch!
(i think that our senses have alot to do with our emotions so thats why i am using them to trigger feelings)

the first box will be APPREHENSION...you will have to put your hand into the unknown! there will be a hole jsut big enough to fit your hand..and inside will be dark with some sort of substance in it!
the reason im doing this is to show how i was feeling the first day i came up here! that feeling of the unknown and what to expect!the fear of a new place!

the following boxes will be filled with noise, colour and touch!

but im still thinking about those...so watch this space!
